Why editors score it lower than customers

Customers mostly review the experience: was it quick, was the person on the phone kind. Editors also score the price, and that is where Personify loses points.

Bankrate's breakdown shows the split clearly.

Both sides

What people praise, and what they regret

Common praise

  • A short, clear online application with a fast decision
  • Money in the account by the next business day
  • Approval after other lenders said no
  • Polite, patient customer service
  • An easy second loan after a good payment record

Common complaints

  • The interest rate, and how much is repaid in total
  • A balance that barely moves in the first months
  • A hard credit inquiry the applicant did not expect
  • Extra documents requested after applying
  • Funding that took longer than expected

Themes summarised in our own words from public reviews on Trustpilot and WalletHub and from complaint narratives published by the CFPB. Consumer groups such as the National Consumer Law Center have also criticised high-cost lenders that make loans through partner banks, a model Personify uses in most states.

How to weigh what you read

  1. Check when it was written. A review from the day the money arrived says nothing about month ten.
  2. Read the three-star reviews. They usually describe both the good and the bad.
  3. Look for your situation. Someone who paid off in four months had a different loan from someone who took four years.
  4. Separate service from price. Friendly staff do not make a 150% APR cheaper.

Where to take a complaint

  1. Personify first. Call (888) 578-9546 or use the contact form in your borrower portal. Keep a note of dates and names.
  2. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. File at consumerfinance.gov/complaint. The lender is normally required to respond.
  3. Your state regulator or attorney general. They license lenders and enforce state lending law.
  4. Better Business Bureau. Public, and Personify has a record of responding there.

Frequently asked questions

Is Personify Financial legit?

Yes. Personify Financial is the consumer brand of Applied Data Finance, LLC, an online lender based in San Diego that has been lending since 2015. It holds an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau. Legitimate does not mean cheap: its APRs run from 36.00% to 179.50%.

What do Personify reviews say?

On Trustpilot, Personify is rated 4.8 out of 5 from more than 16,000 reviews, with most praise going to the fast, simple application and helpful staff. The most common criticism, there and elsewhere, is the high interest rate.

What are the most common complaints about Personify?

The cost of the loan, above all. Other recurring complaints are a hard credit inquiry that surprised the applicant, requests for extra documents, funding that took longer than expected, and balances that fall slowly in the early months.

How do I file a complaint about Personify?

Contact Personify first. If that does not resolve it, you can submit a complaint to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau at consumerfinance.gov/complaint, to your state's financial regulator or attorney general, and to the Better Business Bureau.
